Here is one of our excavators in the middle of an under-construction pond that is in the process of being linen with bentonite as a sealant.

ON-SITE MATERIALS: Clients always want to conserve cash. Applying that to building a pond pretty much means using on-site materials to avoid the costly expense of trucking and materials such as clay and bentonite. This will usually lower the cost of the entire project by as much as 50%. The downside is that on-site materials, by themselves, do not create the best seal, and there is often more seepage than desired. After thorough consultation, it is up to each client to decide what is acceptable.

USE OF LINERS: The best way to effect a good seal is to incorporate liners, either HDPE (high-density polyethylene) or LLDPE (linear low-density polyethylene. These liners are currently installed for about 52 cents a square foot plus prep and finish. The prep consists of providing a smooth surface for the liner to rest and lay upon, as well as a trench to secure the top. Finish involves the use of on-site material to create a protective layer to guard against puncture.

CLAY AND BENTONITE: When possible, we look for the closest clay pit, as this provides options. Clay can be used by itself or by mixing with on-site material to strengthen it. Ultimately the budget will decide how much Clay can be hauled. Sometimes when we use a liner and cover with on-site material, clay can be utilized to provide a thin (4″-6″) cap to help provide a more durable seal and cosmetically to affect the color of the water. In all situations, the budget will dictate how much clay can be used. Bentonite is also used in a variety of circumstances. It is most commonly used in a single layer called a blanket and is sandwiched between two other layers of material. It can also be blended or tilled into a formation and stand alone. There is an art to the application of Bentonite, and it requires careful attention to detail to get the layer even. It can also be used as a patch or plug.
