Lining
Lining a pond with HDPE, LDPE, or RPE (high-density polyethylene, low-density polyethylene, or reinforced polyethylene) is a good idea for several reasons.
Regardless of the liner you decide to buy in the end, it is necessary that the base of the pond is a properly prepared surface to avoid mishaps. That is why a durable pond begins with the correct excavation process which is the separation of soil layers, and its correct re-distribution.
Lining
A pond liner is an impermeable geomembrane used for retention of liquids, including the lining of reservoirs, retention basins, hazardous and nonhazardous surface impoundments, garden ponds and artificial streams in parks and gardens.
HDPE, high-density polyethylene is a fantastic product used in landfills, WWT ponds, animal waste ponds, and mining because of its UV-stable geomembrane and its high chemical resistance.
HDPE geomembrane can be joined via a wedge weld or fusion weld to create a strong, continuous system. The range of available thicknesses, from 40 mil to 120 mil, allows the technology to be adapted to many applications.
LDPE, low-density polyethylene liners are a great economical alternative if your pond requires a more flexible liner. LDPE will fit and give you a close-fitting and wrinkle-free pond base. Its tear-resistant material is guaranteed to provide you with a reliable pond liner that will require no maintenance. Low-density polyethylene is made up of exceptionally tightly bound fibers between layers of UV-proof and rot-resistant coating. This blend of materials has resulted in a strong pond liner that is still flexible enough to be positioned however you please.
RPE, reinforced polyethylene.
The RPE (reinforced polyethylene) pond liner has a high puncture and tear resistance – around 2 to 3 times stronger than EPDM, PVC, and HDPE liners. As an added plus, RPE has a high UV resistance and won’t degrade when exposed to chemicals such as fertilizer nitrates and hydrocarbons. One of the most significant advantages of RPE liner is that many different sizes are available, and because of its lighter weight, single huge panels can be produced. Regarding its weight, RPE is approximately 1/3 of the weight of Firestone’s pond guard EPDM rubber liner.
This weight difference makes it substantially easier to handle and install, especially in larger panels.
Why do we recommend that you use a liner in your pond?
Firstly, these materials are known for their durability and resistance to weathering, chemicals, and UV rays, so they can significantly extend the life of your pond liner, even in harsh conditions.
Second, these liners can prevent leakage and contamination of the environment by blocking the passage of water, nutrients, and other substances to or from the pond.
Third, these liners are flexible and easy to install, especially if they are pre-cast or custom-made to fit the specific shape and size of the pond.
In general, lining a pond with these materials can help maintain a healthy ecosystem, protect the surrounding environment, and save maintenance costs in the long term when the pond is built on a clean, uniform basis and with its dirt layers reorganized to protect even more the water in case the material gets punctured.
